What a day at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham!
The Anthony Lue Foundation was back in action at its 2nd Annual Day at the Races with a new venue this year in Markham, Ontario!
Change is not always a bad thing! We had no idea what to expect when the announcement that the Toronto Indy would be moving to Markham, Ontario.
On Saturday morning our group of participants, their family members and volunteers took in the sights and sounds of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham. Our first stop was at the Nascar Canada and Radical Cup Paddock. That is where we got to meet our Nascar Canada driver Darryl Timmers, #85! It was really neat to learn about his Nascar, the series and some of his experiences behind the wheel. Getting up close and personal with drivers and cars is certainly one of the highlights of the weekend and not an everyday experience.
We then proceeded to the pit lane accessible viewing platform that gave us an incredible view of turns 1 and 2! To see the drivers snake through with such precision was awe inspiring. Many of the participants had never seen a race car in real life so this was something to behold!
The accessible viewing platform is really what made the difference for all of our participants. I really appreciated the platform being there as the walls on racetracks are pretty high and difficult to see over from a seated position. The accessible platform was well constructed and gave everyone enough room to move around.
Like most things in life there were a few hiccups along the way but everyone in the group was extremely understanding. We spent our afternoon on the platform enjoying lunch, having great conversation about the race, life, and most importantly disability and accessibility and how we can work together to move the needle forward.
Although we didn’t get to make it to all of our scheduled stops, the day was a huge success with participants already asking about next year!
This day would not have been possible without our sponsors and partners at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy, Green Savoree Racing Promotions and Equitable Bank. I cannot say thank you enough for making the 2nd annual Day at the Races such a success!
